vivaAerobus to Launch Austin-Mexico Service May 1 with $9.99 Fares to Monterrey and Cancun
Austin, TX (PRWEB) January 29, 2008 -- Starting May 1, travelers will be able to fly directly from Austin, Texas to Cancun and Monterrey, Mexico for as little as $9.99 on vivaAerobus. Company executives announced details of its initial service to and from Austin, as well as formally launching online travel booking at vivaAerobus.com. Austin is the first U.S. City to be served by the innovative ultra low cost carrier.
vivaAerobus will operate out of the new South Terminal at Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA). The City of Austin recently finalized a lease agreement with GE Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS) to construct and operate the new terminal. Currently, GECAS is renovating a former National Guard building at ABIA that will serve as the interim terminal.
vivaAeroBus will offer direct, daily flights from Austin to both Cancun and Monterrey starting May 1. Additional destinations will be added in the coming months.

"With the tremendous interest in our low cost, direct flights to Mexico, our goal was to begin service to Austin as soon as possible," said Mike Szucs, CEO of vivaAerobus. "However, we wanted to wait until the South Terminal was complete in order to best serve our customers. A May 1 service launch date will allow us to be in a terminal that is configured exclusively for carriers such as vivaAerobus, as well as serve Austin in time for the summer travel season."
The simple nature of the terminal -- such as no jet bridges or sophisticated baggage handling system, and common use hold rooms, gates and ticket counter areas -- positions Austin to better compete for air service like the vivaAerobus ultra low cost business model. The South Terminal at ABIA includes parking, rental car facilities, concessions and ground transportation staging areas.

During the announcement event at Rio Grande Restaurant in Austin, several businesspeople and students were on hand to buy tickets as soon as online booking for Austin went live on vivaAerobus.com. Among them was Juan Lauro Aguirre Jr., Executive Director of Dalai, Inc. in Austin, a subsidiary of Monterrey-based Informática Dalai, SA de CV.
